Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Relieve the symptoms of IBS

Peter Whorwell, Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology in the School of Medicine and Director of the South Manchester Functional Bowel Service, uses hypnotherapy to successfully treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

A substantial % of the population suffer with IBS, the symptoms include diarrhoea, pain and bloating. The condition can seriously affect sufferers’ quality of life and finding effective treatment and real relief can be very difficult.

Professor Whorwell has been researching the use of gut-directed hypnotherapy for over 20 years. “IBS is ideal for treatment with hypnosis, as there is no structural damage to the body,” Professor Whorwell explained. “During the hypnotherapy, sufferers learn how to influence and gain control of their gut function, and then seem to be able to change the way the brain modulates their gut activity.”

IBS is a combination of this abdominal pain and irregular bowel habits. Food is moved through the intestines by contractions of muscles in the intestinal walls. Sometimes these contractions lose their normal rhythm. This can generate severe abdominal pain.

The treatment has a success rate of about 70%, and Professor Whorwell believes that hypnotherapy, although it is labour-intensive, is an extremely effective treatment for the condition, and a less expensive alternative to medication.

If your doctor has officially given you an IBS diagnosis, it will be necessary for you to obtain written confirmation stating that it’s ok for you to utilise hypnotherapy.

An integral part of the therapy process is for you to listen to an audio track daily. For your own success, it is strongly advised that you listen to the recording each morning or evening, or both!
